In 1998, India was successful in the testing of the Shakti-I nuclear missile at the Indian Army’s Pokhran Test Range in Rajasthan. The testing took place under the leadership of the late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Bajpayee and former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
Five underground nuclear bomb explosions were conducted as part of the Pokhran-II or Operation Shakti and following the success, Indian was declared as a nuclear state and the sixth country to become part of the nuclear club. Although it wasn’t a part of the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons Treaty (NPT).
Apart from this, the day also marks the flight of indigenously developed Hansa-3, which flew from Bengaluru. It was developed jointly by National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) lab.
On the same day, that is, May 11, 1988, the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) completed the final test fire of the surface-to-air Trishul missile.
